Robin, congratulations on the release of your latest book, Deliver Us From Evil. To get us started today, can you begin by telling us what the book is about?
Hi, thanks for having me. Deliver Us From Evil is about a beautiful yet tough woman working in a beautiful yet tough setting, Brannon Callahan is a search and rescue helicopter pilot for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Strong faith and a decorated history of service have kept her one step ahead of on-the-job dangers, but there’s no precedent for what’s about to happen. After a blizzard takes down a small plane carrying U.S. Marshal Roark Holland (already haunted by a recent tragedy), Brannon must save him in more ways than one and safeguard the donor heart he’s transporting to a government witness on the edge of death. Otherwise the largest child trafficking ring in history—with shocking links from Thailand to Tennessee—will slip further away into darkness along the Appalachian Trail.
I understand there’s a sequel to Deliver Us From Evil coming out in August 2010 titled Fear No Evil. Where will the sequel take us in the storyline?
Fear No Evil is the story of Lincoln Vailes, the best friend of the heroine from Deliver Us From Evil. With his father in a nursing home and his mother needing support, former Great Smoky Mountains park ranger Lincoln Vailes moves to the bayou town of Eternal Springs, Louisiana, to become a police officer. Recent college graduate and eager social worker Jade Laurent has also moved there to try and right the wrongs of an abusive past. But someone is running her car off the road and pointing guns in her direction. As Lincoln investigates her case, he uncovers ties to big-city gang warfare up north that appears to be making its evil way down south.
Deliver Us From Evil tackles the very real—very disturbing—practice of human trafficking. When conducting research about this growing problem, what were some of the most startling facts you uncovered?
What shocked me the most was how often it occurs—right under our noses! It’s modern-day slavery…and appalling.
As a member of the ACFW, what has being a part of the organization meant to you?
I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today in my writing journey if it wasn’t for ACFW. Through the organization, I met my mentor, my critique partners, my writing friends—all people who I don’t think I could do this without. I learned much from the online courses offered by ACFW, as well as the awesome instruction and networking I experienced at the annual conferences.
If you were making a scrapbook page of your life, what are some of the things you would highlight?
My marriage (20 years and counting to a wonderful, godly man), the birth of my three daughters (now 19, 10, and 7), A copy of my first contract, and each one after. Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m an avid scrapbooker so I already have scrapbooks with these events documented. LOL
On your website you have a section called “Traveling Book.” Where did you get the idea of sharing traveling books and how can readers participate in your traveling book random contest?
One of my great writing friends, Pam Hillman, and I were discussing how to increase awareness of Christian fiction outside the normal realm. As is often the case when writers get together and start brainstorming ideas, the concept for the traveling book was born. Your readers can sign up for my reader group off the main page of my website. As each of my books release, I’ll pick 20 random people from my reader group to participate in the traveling book program.
