The Life of a Preacher’s Kid.

I’ve now written TWO books (The Rhythm of Secrets & Reclaiming Lily) about preachers’ wives. Now I’ve taken on a PK!!! Joy, a confused, alienated preacher’s daughter, flaunts her purple hair and piercings in my new book, Reclaiming Lily. I can see where you think I’m a preacher’s kid.

Not.

Actually, my dad filled in as a lay pastor and taught Sunday school classes. Then after retirement, God led my parents to the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board and a ministry teaching English in China. Though I had NO CLUE back in 1988, my parents planted the seed for this my fourth book, Reclaiming Lily. Dr. Kai, my mother’s cancer doctor, shared her poignant story, which germinated that seed. The Divine Influence, the Holy Spirit, caused it to sprout!

About the Book

A storm the size of Texas brews when Gloria Powell and Kai Chang meet in a Dallas hotel. They have come to discuss the future of Lily, the daughter Gloria adopted from China and the sister Kai hopes to reclaim. Kai is a doctor who had to give up her little sister during the Cultural Revolution and has since discovered that an inherited genetic defect may be waiting to fatally strike Lily.

Gloria’s relationship with her daughter is tattered and strained, and the arrival of Kai, despite the woman’s apparent good intentions, makes Gloria fearful. Gloria longs to restore her relationship with Lily, but in the wake of this potentially devastating diagnosis, is Kai an answer to prayer…or will her arrival force Gloria to sacrifice more than she ever imagined?

It’s here, it’s here! My favorite time of year is finally here. I love autumn. Even more so than summer, I love fall. It seems nature’s canvas explodes in vibrant colors and the trees become pretty clusters of orange, red, and yellow hues. This time of year is the only time I miss living in Michigan. I can do without the snow, sleet, and rain, but the fall in Michigan is spectacular—especially up North. When fall rolls around in Michigan, cider mills bustle with business as people, like me, enjoy lazy afternoons of people-watching while sipping fresh apple cider and munching on warm donuts. Yum! And then there are apple orchards, where people can pick their own fruit or buy bags by the pound. What else…oh yeah, and I love the petting zoos. Mind you, I’m afraid to actually touch darn near every animal—one of my many quirks—but, I do enjoy seeing them and watching other people pet them. One of these days, I’m going to have to work up the courage to pet a little goat on the snoot, or maybe an ear, something far away from chomping teeth. Hum…or maybe not.

But even still, fall is so scenic and vibrant with crisp air and leaves that crunch beneath your feet when you walk. Of course, raking the leaves is a major chore, but hey, that’s what kids are for.

Ahhhhh…it’s here. Enjoy the season while you can. We all know how quickly autumn gives way to winter, and we’ll be singing carols before you know it.

How about you? What’s your favorite time of year?
